In this episode, Dr. Donnica will be talking with Denise
Licata
and Hope Marmo (Known as “Laverne & Shirley”) of the AHRC
Nassau (NY) about their ground-breaking “Dance Fit” class for
individuals of all ages with intellectual and developmental
disabilities (IDD). The impediments of intellectual and
developmental disabilities not only stigmatize and isolate affected
individuals, but also contribute to a sedentary lifestyle and
comfort eating. These limitations fall to the wayside at the
Tuesday night “Dance Fit” class the nurses teach. Between the
twists, turns, and claps that get their endorphins pumping,
participants are also making new friends. According to studies,
obesity is 2-3 times greater among people with IDD. We’re going to
talk with Denise & Hope about the step-by- step approach they
use to get this too often overlooked and isolated population
moving and socializing.
